Why are Taxes so Freakin’ Complicated?

I wish President Obama would take the fact that seemingly most of his proposed candidates for appointed posts have had tax issues as a catalyst for tax reform. Heck, as a public relations move, it would probably completely diffuse the perceived double standard that has tax payers wondering why those who create the taxes don’t have to pay them.
I really don’t understand why income taxes have to be so complicated. How much money would we save as a nation if we moved to a flat tax (or at least fixed based on income at time of payment). 99% of the overhead of income tax would go away (reducing costs associated with collecting taxes) and make it more difficult to cheat (increasing the taxes collected).
