Summer rockin’ local style (kinda)

[to be read in annoying, over the top, corporate radio DJ] Here’s a double double DOUBLE shot of summer from local boy, Craig Finn!

As you probably already know, The Hold Steady front man Craig Finn started out here in Minneapolis in Lifter Puller. For today’s contribution to the summer theme, I’ve got one appropriate track from each of the bands. Admittedly, the Lifter Puller song is not one of their strongest, but that’s ok.

The other half of the battle of which the first half is “knowing”

This shirt is a brilliant idea, poorly executed… why break out laser colors? I mean, really, shouldn’t it be 50% knowing, 25% kick-@$$ weapons, and 25% superfluous costumes?

Better luck next time, Joe.

If Knowing Is Half the Battle, What’s the Other Half? Lasers. – The battle – Gizmodo.

I miss Rainer Maria

Alright, I’m shoe-horning Rainer Maria in here because I just realized I really miss them. They broke up a couple years back. Two of the members have gone on to release low-key, solo work, but neither is near as good as Rainer Maria in total.

So, rest in peace, Rainer Maria, or, you know, come back and put out another album.

“I dont wanna have to learn to count”

xkcd_adultThis xkcd is extra good. I must admit, I’ve felt the same way on numerous occasions. Click the pick for the full strip, it’s totally worth it, guaranteed or your money back.

The kitchenette smells like cu…

The kitchenette smells like curry (which I like) with a hint of fermented gym sock (which I do not like).

Summer camp for those of you who share my thoughts on horses

139/365: Flickring in the sunshine

Ok, I really don’t have anything against horses or ponies, well, not much anyway. It’s just become a running joke now so I’ll go with it.

Anyway… this song is great for two reasons:

  1. It’s about computer camp, and while I’ve never been, I can relate
  2. It’s a geek riff on Summer Nights from Grease

I hope you enjoy Datarock’s Computer Camp Love off of their album Datarock.

Looking for more summer camp themed songs? No? Well, I’ll just pretend you said yes anyway. Check out this previous post with The SuburbsMusic for Boys.

I’m not a big fan of horses, but Husky’s are pretty cool

Mixing it up a bit today… Here’s Summertime Cowboy off of Husky Rescue’s Country Falls album.

Remember when cowboys were something kids pretended to be instead of being an unofficial symbol of lung cancer? Thanks, Marlboro.

Webpourri for July 27th

Here are some random links that came up on July 27th that didn’t quite merit their own post:

  • Make Free Outgoing Calls with Google Voice & Gizmo5 [VoIP] I'm not a huge fan of Gizmo5 since it spammed all my contacts (partially my fault for assuming ok meant ok), but it's nice to see third parties jump on the Google Voice bandwagon (even if they're not done building it yet). Maybe someone will come out with some decent SIP handsets.

Did I miss anything exciting? Let me know in the comments.

Cool pool party, la la la la

What’s summer without some fun in the pool? The Aquabats are having a pool party and you’re invited.

That’s right, the summer theme rolls on for the daily track.

Simon’s cat prevails against a housefly (and Simon)

I’d posted one of these quite a while back, but a new one just popped up. I’m not a fan of cats, but I do enjoy watching cats happen to other people.

Here’s to summer, all two weeks of it here in Minneapolis

Sunflower

Welcome to another theme week of daily tunes. This time around, the theme is summer.

I’m starting out with The All Girls Summer Fun Band (from back when they were a cool four-piece instead of a meh three-piece). They’re a fun band (as the name suggests) and you should take it upon yourselves to track down some of their other stuff. Jason Lee is of particular interest to those who knew he was a skateboarder before turning into a Kevin Smith regular, and eventually Earl, from My Name is Earl.

I’m not sure why this is currently stuck in my head, but I thought I’d share it with all y’all. It would be a good day to throw some grub on the grill though.

Mmm… steak.

Look for a new daily track theme starting tomorrow. Very exciting, I know…
