Suddenly I care about security vulnerabilities again (see picture)

I was pretty tired about hearing about security vulnerabilities, but this news item linked from Google News caught my eye. Suddenly, I was interested enough in the topic to click through to the article. Unfortunately the full article failed to keep me interested.

But, if you’d like to learn more, feel free to click the screen capture below.

“There’s a map for that”

Ah, Verizon makes a funny. I’m on Sprint myself but enjoy the substantial coverage CDMA (the network technology Verizon and Sprint primarily use at the moment) has here in the US. If you want cool, it’s still tough to beat the iPhone. If you want a phone, well, Verizon is a pretty good choice.

PlayOn Media Streaming Software for Xbox 360, PS3, & Wii $20

Hurry, only valid through 9/18. Regularly $40, you can save 1/2 off Media Mall’s streaming app that brings Hulu, Netflix, and other online streaming sources to your TV. I know PS3 has a free solution to do the same thing and Xbox has a some of the functionality included with an online account, but as a Wii owner, I’d been left out in the cold. The Wii version does operate differently and is still in beta so be sure to try out the 14 day free trial.

Follow the link below the diagram for the deal.

Jim Gaffigan at Treasure Island 9/4, 9/5

I’ve caught a bit or two on Slacker Radio‘s comedy channel and have been pretty amused. I’m not sure yet whether I’m $50-60 amused (the range of prices for the tickets to the show), but I’m definitely thinking about it. Hit the link below for the full details from Metromix

The iPhone Ad You’ll Never See | CrackBerry.com

I was just having a conversation the other night about reaching my maximum capacity for Apple related enthusiasm. Yeah, ok, their stuff is fine, but it’s really much more evolutionary than revolutionary.

In an attempt to balance the scales a bit, I offer this counterpoint that popped up on CrackBerry.com yesterday. Beware, there’s some language you probably don’t want pumped outside of your cube for all the world to hear.

Where do you tweet that twitter is down?

tweadTwitter really is kinda flakey. I guess no one suggested that it become a critical communication channel, and I’ve always gotten the impression that there’s more than a little duct tape holding the thing together. Still, it’s a little surprising when it goes down.

After some thought, I suspect the answer to “Where do you tweet that twitter is down?” is “Facebook.”

I appreciate stuff that works as advertised

BlackBerry heart
Image by :::Ðerek::: via Flickr

Alright, had it for less than a day, and already I’m hooked on my new (to me) Blackberry Curve. They really ought to market themselves better to the non-business crowd.

So far my favorite thing about it (other than it does everything it’s supposed to really well as opposed to pretty poorly, that’s right, I’m talking about you WinMo), is the Slacker app. It lets you cache stations on your memory card so in areas of poor service (like my house) you can still listen. And even if you are in an area of decent service, listening to cached stations requires less juice than listening over the air (listening to over the air streaming is fully supported too though so you don’t have to cache anything).

Eventually my love will undoubtedly turn into bitter hatred, but we’ll get to that later.

Mobile phone ADHD lands me a Blackberry

Sprint Blackberry Curve 8330

In the search for the perfect phone, I decided to dip my toe into the Blackberry pool. I’m now not so patiently waiting for my new toy to arrive and reading up on all things Blackberry.

I’m pleasantly surprised to see a huge number of enthusiast resources. I’ll admit I was anticipating less of the fanboyism that surrounds the hot gadgets, but Blackberry seems to have it’s fair share of zealots. Is Blackberry the one for me or will the lack of a touchscreen* drive me mad? We shall see.

*Part of the appeal of the Blackberry for me is the physical keyboard, so the Storm isn’t an option for me at the moment, plus I’d like to stick with Sprint for the time being.

Unanticipatable and proud of it

I’m normally not a huge fan of Monty Python (having ALL the skits/sketches/movies/etc quoted to me before acutally having seen any of them performed properly will do that); however, I still dig this shirt from ThinkGeek.

P.S. You may have noticed that I swiched back to Grooveshark from Skreemr. My Grooveshark issue turned out to be that my web host uses PHP 4 instead of PHP 5 by default. Forcing PHP 5 cleared things up quite nicely.

I’m hopping on the Evernote bandwagon (notes tool)

Over the last week and half ago or so, there seems to be a resurgence in blog buzz (bluzz? buzg?) around Evernote. I first recall hearing about it as an alternative to Google‘s Notebook product that they ultimately decided to wind down. At the time, I wasn’t too impressed by Google Notebook, so I didn’t pay much attention to Evernote.

So why is Evernote great when Google Notebook was only meh? (more…)

Caffeinated Nixie Tubes (the gateway subtance between Pixie Stix and cocaine)

ThinkGeek has taken it upon themselves to cram caffeine into yet another product I wouldn’t think needed it. Yet, I still want it. Sure, it’s $10 plus shipping and fondling for 5 tubes, but I’m sure the test tube shaped containers could be reused for something… right?

From ThinkGeek:

Dr. Timmy sat in his lab contemplating his youth, which grew more distant with every passing thought. Mainly, he reminisced about his favorite childhood candies. One in particular stood out. It was basically a paper tube filled with powder candy (we won’t mention names, but you know what we mean). Suddenly, Dr. Timmy threw back his head and began to laugh. He dashed about his lab, flipping switches and throwing levers. There was a crash of lighting and Dr. Timmy held in his hands a thing of beauty. A test tube filled with powder candy (like he remembered), but with a mad scientist twist: it was now loaded with caffeine. And thus, Caffeinated Nixie Tubes were born.

“The IT Crowd: Series 2″ available on Netflix’s Watch Instantly

Styx – Mr Roboto
Found at skreemr.com

ITcrowd2For all of you who enjoyed the first season of The IT Crowd, I’m happy to pass along the news that the second season (series?) is now available to stream from Netflix’s Watch Instantly service.

If you haven’t caught the first season (series), that’s still available too.

Yeah, so there really isn’t any relationship between today’s song choice and the post, other than just general geekiness. Sorry.

Google Voice for the masses (allegedly)

Phoenix – Long Distance Call
Found at skreemr.com

According to The Today Show, Google Voice is going into public beta today. Looks like it’s not open yet, but keep checking back. I’ve been using it for quite some time now and enjoy it quite a bit.
