Like to watch your outdoor summer movies at the bar instead of the park? Brit’s has you covered. Unfortunately, they’re running Monday’s as well, so you’re gonna have to pick between the Loring Park show and Brit’s.
August 2—The Invention of Lying
August 9—Young Victoria
August 16—Pirate Radio
August 23—Twilight
August 30—Sherlock Holmes
September 6—Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
via Brit’s Summer Movie Series – Brit’s Pub – Minneapolis, MN Events | Metromix Twin Cities.
Apparently the Walker walked out on their annual Music and Music in the Park series this year, but City Pages is moving forward without them. And without the Walker’s direction, the film selection is much more… accessible (I believe that’s the current euphemism for less snooty). As usual, shows are Monday nights in August. After-parties are at Nick & Eddie.
Aug. 3: Raising Arizona + Communist Daughter
After-party: Estate
Aug. 10: Fargo + Marijuana Deathsquads
After-party: City On The Make
Aug. 17: Juno + Mayda
After-party: Pink Mink
Aug. 24: Nobody + Red Pens
After-party: The Goondas
The lineup is finalized for the Pizza Luce block party, August 14th, 2010. No commentary from me, other than it’s tough to beat free. Here’s the lineup (in order of appearance, not typical headliner-on-top order):
John Swardson & Get Gone
Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps
City on the Make
Wild Colonial Bhoys
Dessa from Doomtree
Guzzlemug
Pink Mink
Proff with Rahzwell
Red Pens
Look Book
Brother Ali
This event is FREE! Noon – 10pm. Rain or Shine! Pizza Lucé Pizza, Brats (and veggie brats) and Summit Beer! Via Facebook.
Don’t forget to remember the Lyn Lake Street Fest is today from noon to 7.
The free summer(ish) block parties are a little bittersweet. I can’t help but remember the glory days with multiple stages for both the Lyn-Lake shindig and Cedarfest. But those days are gone so I need to learn to appreciate what we have left. Specifically this weekend’s Lyn Lake Street Fest and the Pizza Luce block party in early August.
And really, the street fest is… not unimpressive… last year they had Solid Gold well after they’d made it big locally, and this year Mark Mallman and Har Mar Superstar are both big names in the local scene. It’s really better than anything else you had planned for noon to 7 this Sunday and you know it.
Oh, and it’s not just music, here’s the blurb from the event site:
Fire jugglers, balloon artists and strider bike races are just a couple of the festive side elements in this event. The festival is conceived as a multi-faceted partnership bringing together the 4 neighborhoods surrounding the Lyn Lake intersection, the Blaisdell YMCA as one of the less visible crown jewels of South Minneapolis, and the local business community to simply welcome spring, and showcases the vitality of one of Minneapolis’s most vibrant and eclectic corners. It’s free and family friendly, the music is local, and the crowd is sure to be entertaining.

Lineup
12:00 The Mood Swings
1:30 E.L.nO.
3:00 Mark Mallman
4:15 Sims (+Lazerbeak and Mictlan of Doomtree)
5:30 Har Mar Superstar

That’s right, I said STRING METAL… the video below is not well produced or even necessarily their best tune, but it is the best WTF-experience I could find for the band. A violin, cello, and drum set can do THAT? Well done guys. Check them out Wednesday at the 400 Bar. Tix are $8.
More info on Judgment Day at their site, http://www.stringmetal.com.
Ok, so they’re here in support of what is likely their day job at this point, Yo Gabba Gabba, but it doesn’t mean the big kids can’t have fun too. After two shows for the little kiddies at the Target Center, The Aquabats are off to the Triple Rock.
Unfamiliar? Check out some of their tracks below. Or some of the other related posts here on the site.

Some time ago I was lamenting that The Aquabats were throwing together a tour but it looked to be during the winter and no one comes to Minneapolis in the winter. Well, looks like we (me, anyway) are in luck. The tour is stretching into the spring when it’s officially safe to tour in MN (unless we get our annual March super storm, shhhh).
Anywho, they’ll be at the Triple-Rock on 3/13, tickets go on sale 2/12.
Mr. Chan’s not very informative link

Wish I’d known about this earlier, as in, before it sold out, But apparently Mates of State is (are?) playing this Saturday at the Weisman museum on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. To console myself, I’ve posted Ha Ha off of their Team Boo album here for your listening pleasure, I hope you enjoy it. And, if you happen to catch the show, let me know how it worked out at the Weisman.

So, that post about the Klingon language version of A Christmas Carol… the information I had at the time turned out to be incomplete, and my estimation skills wildly off.
Chris Kidder, the Artistic Director for Commedia Beauregard, was kind enough to drop me a note with some additional information. This is actually the third year the show has been performed and they’re moving to a larger space this year to accommodate the crowds (they’ve sold out the previous seasons).
Commedia Beauregard’s site has more information about the show if you’d like more information. I’ll admit, I thought it would be a tough sell, but I’m impressed they’ve been able to take an off-beat idea and turn it into a holiday tradition. Congratulations!

It’s time yet again for Electric Six’s fall show here in Minneapolis. Although the last few albums haven’t been able to live up to the awesomeness exhibited in the first album, the albums are still decent and the shows are still amazing.
If you haven’t had a chance to check them out live, I encourage you to do so. If you’ve already seen them live then you probably already have your ticket.

Originally, I’d scheduled this post to… uh… post on 11/29, the day of the Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros show at the Varsity. However, the show sold out, so I’ll just bump this up to now. How soon is now? Well, it’s RIGHT NOW.
