Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros’ “Home”

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros

Originally, I’d scheduled this post to… uh… post on 11/29, the day of the Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros show at the Varsity. However, the show sold out, so I’ll just bump this up to now. How soon is now? Well, it’s RIGHT NOW.

Holly Cole coming to The Dakota 12/7-8 (Minneapolis)

A few years before a few years ago, I lucked into a free ticket to see Holly Cole perform a holiday show at the old Guthrie Theater. I was already familiar with Ms. Cole, but I was still pleasantly surprised by the show. It was a nice mix of jazzy Christmas standards as well as some original works that were related to varying degrees to the holidays.

The last few years I’ve found myself looking for her to return for another holiday show and was disappointed to find she was only doing a few shows, and only in her homeland of Canada. Needless to say, I was pretty excited to find this morning’s paper had an ad for The Dakota listing 4 Holly Cole holiday show performances, a 7pm and a 9pm on both December 7th and 8th.

One of the reasons I like the old Guthrie, was it was a very intimate space and there wasn’t a bad seat in the house. Well, The Dakota is even more intimate-er.

So, I apologize for a “holiday” post on November 1st, but it’s for a good cause. Uh, well, not a “cause” per se… just listen to the song embedded above and then go get your tickets.

Kevin Kling’s “Tales from the Charred Underbelly of the Yule Log”

Kevin Kling’s Tales from the Charred Underbelly of the Yule Log is a annual event I very much look forward to. While the stories are largely the same from year to year, and he’s introduced some less entertaining elements into the show, it’s still one of the few things that feel like the holidays in a non-commercial sense.

The show is Monday, December 7th at the Guthrie.

Click the pic for more info on the show.

Dethklok “live” tonight

Tonight, Dethklok (of Metalocalypse fame) play at Roy Wilkins’ with Mastodon and some other bands. The show was at the Myth, but with the whole maybe probably closed but possibly [not] opening at some time in the future, the show was moved.

The video is kinda sorta NSFW, for cartoon monster toplessness.

Last chance to be outside until June, The Honeydogs and “Waiting for Guffman”

Don’t forget, Vita.MN is hosting music and movies at the Lake Harriet band shell tonight. The Honeydogs are up first followed by Waiting for Guffman. Unfortunately, they saved the worst for last, but that’s just my opinion, doesn’t mean you can’t go.

Living Colour in town tonight! (Minneapolis)

1456548_ratio4x3_width180Bummer, wish I were free to go see them. Although the last album I checked out from Living Colour wasn’t anything special, or at least not on par with their early work, I do very much enjoy their first two albums.

I hope someone out there will get to see them tonight and let me know how it was.

Oktoberfest in the Twin Cities 2009 | Metromix Twin Cities

Got Beer?

Earlier I’d mentioned September means good beer. Metromix has done a run-down of the Oktoberfesty stuff coming up in the Twin Cities and some related resources. Check out the links below for more info, or the link below the block quote for their summary page.

From Metromix:

Here in the Twin Cities, we like to usher in autumn in hearty Germanic style, and if you want to participate in the fun, then we’d like to show you where to have some good Bavarian suds, and where to get your polka-party on.

Below you’ll find the best German bars in the Twin Cities, a line up of some of the best Oktoberfest parties and some photos from last year’s chaos at the always-fun Gasthof Zur Gemutlichkeit.
