Some scheduled posts didn’t go as planned

Sorry - On Australia Day
Image by spud murphy via Flickr

Ok, I can count, I really can. But it looks like a couple of the counting theme posts I’d queued up didn’t go, so I’ll just tack them on the end. It will be like reminiscing about something you never cared about to begin with.

Finally, Mary Kay for dudes

I’ve been suggesting there’s a market for Tupperware type parties for males for some time (see guy expo post). While this isn’t the booze and pr0n I’d suggested would sell best, it’s a move in the right direction.

From the StarTribune on a recent ManCave Worldwide event:

It was the kind of spiel heard every night at home product-pitching parties across the nation. “These are the best tongs I’ve ever used … I’ve got some of this at home … I’m going to wrap this up quickly, because I know you’re here to socialize.”

Except that there was nary a plastic bowl or pink-hued garment in sight. And the semi-rapt audience was husky and hairy, broader-shouldered and deeper-voiced than one would expect.

At least the guys associated with ManCave seem to be a little more honest about the motivation:

“”I’ll bet this is the first [meat-ing] with a disco ball,” Stoebner said. “I used to make fun of my wife and her parties, like, ‘You girls always have to get together and take each other’s money.’ And now we’re right there.”

Here’s some related media.

Blog comment SPAM capitol of the world: Russia?

SIERRA MADRE, CA - MAY 29: Spam, the often-ma...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Maybe this is the case for email SPAM too, and I’m just not tuned into it because the Gmail SPAM filter is pretty good, but what’s up with all the blog comment SPAM for Russian websites?

Just for fun, I’ll let any SPAM that comes through for this post get published.

Is it just me, or did Sarah Palin just go all Jesse Ventura?

Mates Of State – Like U Crazy-Crazy (live)
Found at skreemr.com
palinwaders
jesseventura222-thumb-320x215

I don’t want to talk about the political views of either Sarah Palin or Jesse Ventura right now, I just want to point out that Palin seems to have contracted the same sort of crazy that Ventura had as his stint as governor of Minnesota wrapped up.

I’m not sure what compels politicians to go on camera in fishing waders or pirate beard braids. I suppose you could argue it’s obvious they really don’t care anymore. But then why continue to do the media events? Are they trying to make a point about the message being more important than the mouthpiece? Is it an appeal to the common [wo]man?

I apologize for the quality of the embedded tune, but the live version does a fun little medely with Gnarles Barkley‘s Crazy that I wanted to include.

The Plight of the Goths

Free Goth Baby Belladonna Creative Commons

The Goths are an interesting crowd. I’ve had Goth friends in the past and they’re pretty much like everyone else with two main distinctions.

  1. Better than average musical taste
  2. Stronger than average dedication to image

BoingBoing posts a link to a blog cataloging Goth reactions to sunlight: Goths in Hot Weather. This reminded me of an old post somewhere on the net on “how to keep your blacks black,” a Goth laundry guide of sorts. Sadly I can’t seem to track it down. If anyone knows what I’m talking about and has the link, let me know.

Brazil Says Debris Found in Ocean Might Be From Plane – NYTimes.com

It would have never occurred to me that it’s possible to lose a commercial airliner in this day and age. I guess I just assume everything is always connected all the time. I’m surprised this isn’t getting more attention. Even if there isn’t any new news, seems like something the press would be all over.

I hope for the sake of the friends and families, the plane is found soon. Not being sure only makes the whole thing worse.

I know it’s in poor taste, but does this make anyone else think of Lost?

What I’m Skeptical About Now: “The Shangri-La Diet”

The Shangri-La Diet: The No Hunger Eat Anything Weight-Loss Plan” by Seth Roberts sounds crazy, but crazy like a fox, or crazy like a cat-lady? Ok… so supposedly by consuming 100-400 calories daily in either sugar water or no-taste oil (extra-light olive oil, canola oil, or safflower oil) you can adjust your body’s weight “set point.” The more you consume (not to exceed 400 calories) the better it works.

Here are the caveats:

  1. The oil or sugar water has to be consumed at least an hour before or after eating anything or consuming beverages with flavor.
  2. It’s an appetite suppressant technique so if you’re a recreational eater, it may well not help you. It’s supposed to make you hungry less often and fuller faster so you may wind up eating smaller portions though.
  3. Because it works through appetite suppression, you still ultimately have to eat responsibly, the program just makes it easier to eat less and think about food less.

As I said, I’m skeptical, but it’s so crazy, I just have to try it. I’m reasonably easily maintaining my current weight, but i could probably lose another 10lbs to get rid if a little extra doughiness. We’ll see, I’ll let you know if it works.

Reviews:
Absurd, ridiculous, and remarkable. It is quite simply one of the most unusual weight loss books ever written. . . . — Diet-Blog.com

Everything on the cover is literally true. You make one, almost subtle, change, and you lose weight. . . . — CalorieLab.com

Seth Roberts… has now hit upon a weight-loss theory that might just benefit a few million people. — Stephen J. Dubner, co-author of Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

The Shangri-La Diet is unlike any diet you ever have come across; it is, in the truest sense, a hack. — Health-Hack.com

The diet to end all diets….You actively feel like not eating. . . . — Joyce Cohen, HuntGrunt blogger and New York Times columnist ["The Hunt"]

The great thing about Roberts’s methods is that you will know whether they work within a day or two. — MarginalRevolution.com –This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

T-Mobile’s Definition of “Fair” is “Poor”

t-moSo, I’m checking out coverage on T-Mobile‘s web site and I’m allegedly in a “fair” region. Hmm… that’s odd, because my service sucks… let’s see what “fair” means: “You should be able to place calls usually outdoors, occasionally inside a car, but not indoors.” Wow… lame.

That doesn’t sound like “fair” to me, in fact, it sounds like “poor” or “barely” or “technically.” To quote Inigo Montoya, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

Gizmodo – Protect Yourself Against the Swine Flu, With Style – Swine flu

So, I don’t know much about the swine flu except

  1. You don’t get it from eating pork
  2. Health professionals claim masks don’t offer significant protection

But, if you’re determined to wear a mask, why not get a cool one so it’s not totally worthless.

Kelly Link: “Pretty Monsters”

Where was Kelly Link when I was… oh… I dunno, 13-18 years old? She’s got a great voice for that aged reader and It doesn’t come off as being condescending, or simplistic. The themes and topics she addresses are real issues for teens. All of her books are short story collections and her most recent, Pretty Monsters is just such a compilation (otherwise I couldn’t have said “all”).

Anyway, for the horror/fantasy crowd in their teens, Pretty Monsters is a great place to start digging into Kelly Link.

I’ve just started Stranger Things Happen and haven’t gotten very far so I can’t speak for it or any of her other work, but here are her collections:

Additionally, she’s worked on the following collections:

Horror: Boy Killed Anally When Office Chair Explodes

Apparently the pneumatic cylinder responsible for height adjustment blew and created a fragment grenade out of the rest of the chair. The metal fragments caused a great deal of blood loss which ultimately was the cause of death.

This is legitimately worrisome. I can take some solace in the fact that my employer has given me a chair that releases pressure on its own as I shift positions over the course of the day.
