Seven with bonus five and six references

Number Seven

So seven isn’t in the title of Monkey Gone to Heaven, it is screamed repeatedly which I felt counted, particularly since it ties in nicely with having posted Frank Black yesterday.

if man is 5, if man is 5, if man is 5, then the devil is 6, then the devil is 6, then the devil is 6, then god is 7, then god is 7, then god is 7

“Three Days” for the third day of the counting theme

Number 3

Had I been able to easily track down Three Times a Lady by Cloud Cult, you would have seen that instead of this here, but I couldn’t so you didn’t. Instead you see/hear Three Days from Jane’s Addiction’s Ritual de lo Habitual.

As you may recall I had some issues with scheduled posts going live last week so I’m circling back now. When asked if 3 was supposed to have been Three is the Magic Number I realized I’d made a bad choice on my own, but I’ve included it as a special bonus below.

The counting theme comes to a close, what have we learned?

the number 12

Ok, I’m running out of counting theme gas. So, with 12, I’ll draw the theme to a close. I’m pretty excited I was able to dig up the track though. Not only is it good for 12, but it’s also a good review of 1-11.

Now that I think about it, a fair number of the counting songs from when I was a kid stopped at 12. I have another one stuck in my head right now, but since the only lyrics I can remember are just counting up to 12, I don’t have much to go on to try to track it down. If anyone out there is psychic and thinks they know the other kids’ 12 song I might be thinking of, let me know in the comments.

This one goes to ELEVEN!

Eleven

Eleven O’Clock from Morphine doesn’t rock nearly as hard as the post subject would suggest the included song might. But Morphine rocks in their own special way.

Ten is a cop out

The Number Ten

I wanted a Softies song, Count to Ten but couldn’t track it down so you’ll get Jeremy off of Pearl Jam’s Ten, and you’ll like it. Well, I suppose you could just not press the play button… what fun is that though?

Number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9…

Number Nine

I promised no Revolution #9 and I delivered, or… failed to deliver? Didn’t deliver as promised? Successfully failed to deliver? Whatever, this isn’t it.

A few months back, Nine Inch Nails claimed they were on their last tour with Jane’s Addiction (who I coincidentally played back on “3″). I think they’ve already scheduled and played shows since they weren’t going to play anymore, but that’s not the important part, or at least the interesting part I’m trying to get to. The interesting, or at least amusing thing was the NIN/JA or NINJA name for the tour including Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction. Ok, that’s the end of my story. Alright, so it’s not that great a story and you’ve probably already heard it anyway.

Sorry.

Eights are great (but there aren’t many songs about them)

Number Eight
Image by Auntie P via Flickr

I apologize in advance. 8 was tough. It would appear the only significant 8 song is Eight Days a Week from The Beatles. When looking for something to serve as 8 in my counting theme, I got about a bazillion hits for that song and very little else. Since it came from their early uber-pop phase, I’m not a fan of that track. So, instead, here’s some random odd-ball track from David Bowie.

Tomorrow should be better… I won’t be posting anything from The Beatles for 9 either, so no need to stay away for fear Revolution #9 is going to get you.

Whole lotta sixes goin’ on

the number six on heaven
Image by /// keno via Flickr

I concede that Six Sixty Six is really 666 and not three 6s, but it’s my blog and I’ll cry if I want to, er, I mean bend the rules… Anyway, this rarer than most track is off of Frank Black’s Christmass album (that’s actually the correct spelling of the album).

Five days and going strong

Five
Image by wauter de tuinkabouter via Flickr

Wes Anderson movies had a sweet spot of about 3 movies where he really had his groove, but hadn’t used up all his quirkiness (Rushmore, The Royal Tennenbaums, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou). Incidentally all of them had great music as well. Wes had a theme of his own for the soundtrack of Life Aquatic in that most of the soundtrack is made of of old Bowie songs sung in Portuguese by Seu Jorge with only his acoustic guitar for accompaniment.

Let’s just be friends

Number four

Alright, where possible, I was trying to use artists I hadn’t posted previously, but when your theme is counting and you find a song for four where the counting is off, you just have to use it, or at least I did.

I hope you enjoy Friend is a Four Letter Word from Cake.

Up next in the counting theme: 2

The Number 2 In Light Trail
Image by Jake Risbridger via Flickr

As the theme continues, I found two to be more difficult to pick a song for than one had been. At least twice as hard. I decided to mix it up a bit and post a song from an artist I hadn’t used before. Here’s Two Hearts Beat as One from U2, from back when they were great. In fact, War was their best album, in my opinion.

I know I had a post about not wanting to count, but now I do

one is the loneliest number

Want to count, that is. Anyway, starting a new theme to see how far I can get counting. We’ll see how this goes…

For your listening pleasure, I present One (is the Loneliest Number), which was originally Harry Nilsson, but has been covered here by Richard Cheese.
