Eulogizing the Uptown Bar

The Uptown Bar used to have some great shows “back in the day.” A wildly impressive list of bands that later made it big, I mean BIG. Eventually they dropped the live shows and later tried to pick them up again, but never managed to book much other than generally mediocre local bands.

The Current did a series of well done videos looking back on the heyday of live music at the Uptown. I really can’t say it enough, try to get out there this week before they close. It’s a historical site that may or may not come back. But regardless of whether or not it makes it back, it will never be the same.

The Current public radio pledge drive

So, tis the season for the public radio stations to beg for money to make ends meet. Sure, we complain about the interruption, but you know, if you’re irritated by what you’re hearing that means two things:
1) You’re listening to the station
2) You like the station enough to sit through the pledge drive

I’d donated to Radio K in the past, before the Current was around. I like Radio K, but depending on the time of day, location in town, whether or not school was in session, and the entrails of a freshly slaughtered chicken, I could be flipping between a couple FM frequencies, as well as the old standby 770 AM trying to find a solid signal.

The Current has a somewhat more dependable signal and with DJs like Mark Wheat (a Radio K alum) and Mary Lucia (a Rev 105 alum), they’re not just using a formula to appeal to a niche, they actually like the music they play and it shows.

So, head over to thecurrent.org and throw ‘em a couple bucks.

Need a reminder why? Listen for a bit…
