I do find myself wondering what the series of events would be that leads to Rain Man being shot at by Dirty Harry.

As xkcd points out in the strip below (and I can agree with based on my 12/22 birthday), folks born on or around Christmas can miss out on some of the attention they might otherwise get on their birthday.
On the other hand, there are some perks too. For instance, I only had to go to school on my birthday once as a kid.
October has turned out to be quite the slacker month for me, posts are way down. Interestingly enough, it doesn’t seem to impact the number of RSS subscribers, although total visits are down due to less content to, uh, visit.
Anyway, just thought I’d post a couple web comic strips on this Friday morning for all y’all to enjoy. Click on the images to visit the pages the strips came from and poke around.
I was killing time by clicking the random button over at the xkcd site and this one popped up. Not sure how practical it is to try to work into daily conversation, but it sure would be fun to try.
On a related note, the first xkcd book is coming out shortly (volume 0). If you’re a fan, head over to the site to find out more about it. Proceeds go to a good cause.
xkcd – A Webcomic – Reverse Euphemisms.

Alright, as you may have guessed with two book posts in two days, I had some time off and got some extra reading in.
This one was particularly timely as it happened to coincide with a recent xkcd comic (see below). The story is actually reminiscent of the book I recently read, Evil Genius by Catherine Jinks. Actually, considering Evil Genius is pretty recent, and Enders Game looks to have originally been published in 1977, Evil Genius is more accurately reminiscent of Enders Game.
It’s actually a great young adult title, but can appeal to anyone. It’s technically a sci-fi title, but it has more sociological content than pew-pew laser shooting action. I strongly recommend the read though if you, like I, managed to miss reading this book already.
Read on for what others have to say about it (more…)
Sometimes xkcd isn’t so much funny as it is just randomly surprising (which is always more entertaining than Marmaduke).
Can you conceive of a sub-subculture that’s more specific than people who like to dress up like stuffed animals who like to dress up and pretend to be people? Ok, one that doesn’t involve poo?

So I guess The Matrix has been out for 10 years now. Frankly I never understood why it was such a big deal. Maybe because I’d already heard the classic “brain in a jar” philosophical argument? Anyway, xkcd does a pretty decent job of pointing out a few of the chinks in the film’s awesomeness armor. Click on the pic for the full strip.
Ah statistics… how did I get through college without having to take at lease one stats course? I’m not sure, but it’s those little bits of luck that I’ve already used up that are hindering my lottery retirement strategy.
